Interview with Tenant On Angels’ Wings

Crystal Lake Plaza had the privilege of sitting down with the extraordinary individuals behind “On Angel’s Wings.” This dynamic organization, driven by unwavering dedication and boundless compassion, has been making a profound impact in our community. Join us as we delve into their inspiring journey, learn about their mission, and discover the incredible ways in which On Angel’s Wings is spreading hope and love throughout the Crystal Lake region.

Interviewer: What inspired the creation of On Angels’ Wings?

On Angels’ Wings: A deep love of animals and empathy for those abandoned, abused or neglected. Emily and I volunteered at the Sparrow’s Nest resale store for 4 years.  Near the end of those 4 years, I left my final corporate job which was moving out east and decided that a resale store was a good way to fund our pet rescue efforts.

Interviewer: What are your core values and principles as a resale and pet adoption center?

On Angels’ Wings:

  • Treat every living being with kindness and compassion.
  • Collaborate with other rescues/shelters in pet placement efforts.
  • Raise awareness of animal welfare and pet homelessness through community outreach.
  • Provide families in need with free necessities (e.g., clothing) at the resale store. Provide pets of families in need with free pet food.

Interviewer: Tell us about how the resale store helps fund animal welfare programs.

On Angels’ Wings:

  • All net proceeds of the resale go directly towards paying for the expenses of running our animal rescue/vetting and rehoming programs.
  • This includes veterinary care (biggest expense), food, and when needed, training or rehabilitation.

Interviewer: Can you tell us about the process you take after a rescued animal has arrived at your facility?

On Angels’ Wings:

  • Assess medical needs (vaccinations, current health/immediate care)
  • Determine best shelter option for the pet (if ready to be adopted, a space in our pet adoption center), a foster home for those requiring additional vetting or care prior to adoption.

Interviewer: What is the most unique item ever donated?

On Angels’ Wings: We’ve had some incredibly funny items donated. I often think we would make a good reality show, between the store and the adoption center.  I remember getting a small white-handled gun that I thought was a lighter (but was indeed an antique gun).  Asked the police to take it.  Lots of amazing antiques with rich history.  Folks who prefer to shop and donate rather than wear their items. AND, a large sum of cash in a shoebox.

Interviewer: What is the most valuable item ever donated?

On Angels’ Wings: Jewelry and artwork. One necklace sold for $1,900.

Interviewer: What challenges do you face in pet rescue?

On Angels’ Wings: We face what the other rescues/shelters face – not enough volunteers, money or homes for these innocent pets who are homeless at no fault of their own. This past year has been worse than most in terms of pets given up and needing homes.  We get calls from all over the country – other shelters hoping to move their over-capacity intakes.

Interviewer: How can members of the community get involved and support On Angels’ Wings?

On Angels’ Wings:

  • Consider being a foster home for 1 pet or a pregnant dog or cat.
  • Consider donating your time at the rescue – walking dogs, socializing the pets or helping keep the facility sanitized.
  • Volunteering in many other capacities including the resale store.
  • We can always use monetary donations.
  • And, we have wish lists of items.

Interviewer: How long have you been located at Crystal Lake Plaza and what made you choose this location?

On Angels’ Wings: We’ve been in the Crystal Lake Plaza for 4 years. Our previous location was too small and often folks couldn’t find it.  The CLP location had nearly twice the space of the previous location and a landlord willing to accommodate our needs (with pets).

Interviewer: Tell us how people can get in touch with you.
